Violet Cold -

Violet Cold is, according to its lone member Emin Guliyev, an “experimental one-man band from Baku, Azerbaijan.” Azerbaijan is a small transcontinental country situated where Eastern Europe and Western Asia meet, sharing borders with Iran, Armenia, Russia, Georgia, and flanked by the Caspian Sea to the east. You’ve most likely never heard of it until now, but with Desperate Dreams, Violet Cold’s first full length after releasing 24 singles and 2 EPs, Emin has burst through the doors of obscurity into the light. And what a beautiful, rapturous light it is.

It’s possibly due to Emin’s relatively unknown (at least within the metal scene) locale that Desperate Dreams is such a unique find within the saturated genre of post black metal. In the opening seconds of “La Petite Mort,” the album’s first and featured track, it becomes immediately clear that Mr. Guliyev is an extremely bold and gutsy songwriter. That major chord synth pop melody is one of the most joyous lead-ins to a black metal record you’re likely to find, and it sets the tone for the rest of the album with authority. These synth pop melodies and hooks are ever-present throughout all 8 tracks, usually serving as the centerpiece that holds the swirling chaos surrounding it in tact.

Though that description may be a turn off to the more morose among you, the synths on Desperate Dreams do nothing to round the sharp edges of Violet Cold’s ferocity. These black metal tracks rip and snarl, trying to claw their way to the promise of the shimmering euphoria to which those pop undertones elude, but ultimately falling short. Desperate Dreams is tagged on Bandcamp as “depressive black metal,” and despite an abundance of what could only be described as feel good moments, there’s an ever-present bleakness to these songs as Emin’s sorrowful screams betray the bright music surrounding him.

There is beauty in the existential struggle we all face as sentient beings. The daunting task of finding meaning, understanding ourselves, and ultimately surrendering to our own demise. Violet Cold has managed to stir that beauty to the top of the pot, if only for a brief 33 minutes, and asked us to consider this balance of light and shadow. The contrast and the interconnectedness of it all. The idea that even though we may always walk in the shadows, we are by definition never far from the light.

Metal music is a beautiful thing with the ability to span across many cultures and nations. It grew from it’s early European roots to nestle across all seven continents in one form or another. Even so, there are some countries you rarely hear the sound echo from. Recently, we received one of these rare echoes.

Azerbaijan. Look for metal bands from this nation and you’ll find they’re few and far between. But it turns out this nation is home to a rare specimen, both sonically and locational wise. Emin Guliyev is an incredible one man band operating under the moniker of Violet Cold. His craft is quite unique and performed with phenomenal execution. He is an experimental black metal artist adding in elements of shoegaze, post-metal, and even electronic dream pop! It’s more or less easy to guarantee you won’t find a project like this no matter where you look!

Better yet, Emin Guliyev is, by far, one of the most prolific artists we have ever encountered here on The Circle Pit. On his Bandcamp page, he’s put out a total of 29 different releases from albums to singles since (wait for it…) DECEMBER 2013! This includes 2 albums and 3 EPs to be more specific. And all of his material is rock solid from what we’ve heard. It’s clear this guy has a golden work ethic. And for that, he has our total respect.

It’s definitely recommended that you give this man’s music a go. We’ve provided the stream to his latest album, “Desperate Dreams”, which was released just two months ago. If you enjoy the music, be sure to show some love to Violet Cold through the links down below. Hope you all have a good day!

Violet Cold is Emin Guliyev's experimental one-man band from Baku, Azerbaijan. His project started a year ago and  "Acrophobia" is his latest track, freshly uploaded, just eight hours ago.

This track does not evoke in me any of the characteristics typical for people who suffer from acrophobia - the extreme/irrational fear of heights. It does however paint vivid images in my mind. I can see myself balancing on the tip of my toes on the top of a metal pole, hundreds of meters above the ground. Or slowly walking down on an ever so narrow stone ledge, with my eyes closed.  "Acrophobia" brings me confidence in a peaceful manner in moments of imminent danger, that sort of feeling I am having while listening to the song.

If you wand more of Violet Cold's music, please visit his soundcloud or bandcamp page.

Here's a glorious and triumphant black metal exclamation from Azerbaijan's Violet Cold, a one man band who has released a string of singles and EP's touching on everything from techno to ambient, grind to jazz, and now this.  "La Petite Mort" sounds like victory.  It sounds like rising from the ashes after battle.  Listen below and download the "Desperate Dreams" album here.

Let this heavy storm of euphoria wash away your sins. United we stand.

I have a delicious treat for all the sorry ingrates out there who dared ruffle the feathers of the almighty Deafheaven. Solemn judgment for the damned, a magic jammer for the wicked souled hostility goblins that defied the new guard of black metal, swords of revealing light for those pure at heart. A change of heart for those willing to open their once heavily guarded hearts. A treat for the guardians of the trve who rose above from the sorry depths of hell to hate, hate, hate on the delicate emotional colonialism of the new wave of sensitive black metal. A treat that will have you trading out your smouldering, fire-breathing asshole for a lavender garden filled with butterflies and inner peace. MWHUAHHHHH!!!!!!

The treat I have for you all is a band called Violet Cold. A band so radiant and celestial, a band so purple hued that the members of Darkthrone would choke on their breath and turn into catmint if their grim ears were unfortunate enough to witness and absorb their pleiadian, space ambient blackened pop metal sound. Violet Cold was born in the majestic depths of Azerbaijan in the year 2013 through the radiant eyes, heart, hands and soul of one incredulous man named He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named. Desperate Dreams is the latest release by the band. It's sound can be described as sugar, spice and everything nice. Like a Golden Corrall stocked with new age books, heart chakra paintings, herbs, yoga selfies, flower gardens and colorful pastels instead of their traditional icky, Satanic affair. The album is an amalgamation of electronic pop, space ambient and black metal with knee-buckling piano instrumentals thrown in for the good measure of helping you perfectly align your chakras. You only live once so why be a buffoon with bad morals and hygiene?

The album starts as beautifully it finishes. With piano flourishes so captivating it's almost a shame that the album can't be like that forever. Nonetheless, the show must go on. "La Petite Mort" is the first proper track on the album and it immediately swarms you with unrepentant beauty. Driving keyboards that must have been inspired by the indigo children themselves provide the foundation for the record. Synths beamed down from the heavens that sound so delicate and divine. There is no darkness to be found. There is no battle with the draconians today. Today they've had a change of heart. There is only love and light. Feel your soul begin to release the toxins that lie within. The guitar patterns are simplistic and complimentary towards the dense spellbinding circle of angel synth that encloses this record. Although playing second fiddle the guitar provides some nice heartfelt melodies and tremolo picked sweetness. Percussion is subdued as well but once more it's not a bad thing. There is no pot of greed here. Only unity and divine spirit. The drumming patterns are relaxed but efficient in providing a positive surge of intensity for the record's celestial atmosphere. The vocals are harsh but expressive and provide a nice injection fairy lily-esque dynamic to the synth, guitars and rhythm section. They're not too grim but not too delicate either.

To me, Violet Cold has the potential to be the gate guardian to this new realm of emotionally expressive black metal. By going softer and being more delicate than anybody else Violet Cold is beginning to traverse away from familiar waters and starting to head into the unknown. The old ethos has clearly been relinquished, now I'm excited to see what this band can do next. Life used to be black for this genre, why continue this path when you can do so periwinkle, lilac and turquoise?

Seeing the title "Desperate Dreams" and the tag "black metal", most minds will be set to the most normative standard of what black metal is supposed to be: A dark convulsion of feelings. Anger, frustration, ill-intent and whatever is considered to be negative. But, there is another side to this musical landscape that, for me, seems to come to fruition in newer bands and the iterations and mingling of different musical elements. Some annotate this kind with the denominator of "hipster", which in more considered and less visually inclined terms still is better said in the prefix of "post-" metal. Deafheaven might be one of the first and biggest name to fall under this newish category and rightfully so. They were the first band who’s piercing shrieking I found fitting and listenable by means of emotional depth and affective appeal.

In Violet Cold we find, what often times can be found in this field of music, a singular mind composing music. With the risk of sounding assertive of a region and music scene I do not know at all, what makes this singular approach even more striking and original, is that this project stem from Azerbaijan. There may be many bands adhering to playing metal music, other influence might also be present and I know that nowadays spatial difference is almost nullified through the Internet, but what seems to be the major point of distinction is a divide between the bigger scenes of Europe or America. For how new and fresh this album sounds, a kind of seclusion from factors creating boundaries and a solitude harboring creativity is a nice thought.

Nonetheless, dwelling on genre distinctions, Desperate Dreams appears to be black metals love album. Not in the sense of actual love songs of an character professing his love or even singing about the concept or emotion of love, but much rather in the sense of the sounds and vocals recreating the sensation of love in all its different, and often times hurtful, hues. The term "euphoric" black metal is used in context of this album and it works well with the notion of love. These two ideas might seem odd in context of a person screaming over walls of sound, but bear with me. One major thing that brought me to music with shouts and screams is the experience and reimaging of screaming at its core. Surely, most representations in these kinds of genre really have the intention of expressing negative feelings, using the voice as an instrument and going further exceeding what can be put into and expressed through usual phonetic expression.

But apart from all intentions put into this vocal style and bearing in mind the existence of joyful screaming, the affective nature of it, what happens to the listener when experiencing these shouts, is one major point of interest for me. In Desperate Dreams you get what can be considered to be "tortured" shouts, the harsh and shrill shrieks that would be assessed to sensations of pain. But there is something in these screams that resonates differently with you. The sheer will power and energy put into these sounds touches upon the extremely positive rather than notions of negativity. Here we find euphoria: Not just a "simple" feeling, but an excess of sensation and feeling. The transgression of comprehensible experiences, a breaking of boundaries.

And the major boundary broken by Violet Cold is the divide of sadness and happiness in creating euphoria. You can perceive deep sadness and pain or joyful ecstasy within this music, but onlyafter passing through the affect of euphoria. In my outcome, I sense love. Love as creating the same mingling of positive and negative, of ones own perception being enhanced and saturated, an experience that at first is not comprehensible by intellectual means. In Goethe’s play Egmontthere is a song from which one of the best German expression of love stems:

"Freudvoll
Und leidvoll,
Gedankenvoll sein,
Langen
Und bangen
In schwebender Pein,
Himmelhoch jauchzend,
Zum Tode betrübt –
Glücklich allein
Ist die Seele, die liebt."

The expression of "Himmelhoch jauchzend, zu Tode betrübt", which in my opinion can´t really be translated rightfully into English – I only find "on top of the world, down in the dumps" and this doesn´t even come close – can be taken away of the essence of what makes this album great and only furthers my point of Violet Cold expanding the usual notions of black metal with his take on the genre.

All these multi-faceted experiences are represented musically. First and foremost the simple piano intro and outro not only provide and almost narrative framing of the record, but from the first to the last second create a delicate form of space for the sounds to revel in. While "Lonely Universe" in its heavy progression really exudes the feeling of loneliness, closer "Euphoria" sees Violet Cold channeling simple and airy melodies one might find in the works of Eluvium. After 15 seconds of evocative silence at the end of the intro, you´re hit with synth-lines throughout the album. These synth melodies are reminiscent of 80´s pop music. Always clean and seldomly menacing they deepen the sense of not sounding singularly depressed, almost giving songs like "Le Petite Mort" or "Endless Journey" an dancy vibe before the other sounds come crashing in. This element alone makes the whole experience quite unique and backing the walls of guitar with synths buried in the back and piercing through at times builds a unique atmosphere. For the more conservative elements of blasting guitars and frantic drumming, the instruments sound incredibly clear and even the walls of sound never appear to be muffled, which in the whole experience only furthers the notion of positivity of this record.

After all, everybody who doesn´t adhere to some strange purism and enjoys creative music will find a gem in Desperate Dreams. As Violet Cold seems to have constructed this album as an imaginative journey going from dark to light, he seems to have managed to play with the dichotomies in the most intruding way I have long since experienced in metal music. All the other works on his bandcamp page are also worth checking out and showcase a diversity that seems to have been poured and solidified in Desperate Dreams. That being said, keeping track of everything this artist does until his next full length might not only be worthwhile, but also give insight to his creative journey altogether. Buy this album and support the artist! Going back to the German expression of "himmelhoch jauchzend, zu Tode betrübt", only someone with deep love of his craft could have made this kind of album and you´re missing out on this feeling if you skip this one.
